Kenya - Nyeri Mihuti AA
This top-notch AA grade coffee comes from the Mihuti wet mill, located in Mihuti town in Nyeri's Mukurwe-ini Constituency. This area sits between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares range, with an altitude of about 1,700 meters in town and climbing higher in the surrounding hillside farms. It’s a rural farming region, mostly known for coffee and dairy production.
The Mihuti "Factory" (Kenyan lingo for "washing station") is part of the Rugi Farmer's Cooperative Society. Rugi oversees its member mills, providing farmers with support like agronomy advice, pre-harvest financing, and marketing help. Rugi is an established cooperative, dating back to the late 1960s.
Rugi’s membership includes around 4,500 smallholder farmers, most with plots no bigger than a hectare. At the mill, coffee is depulped, then left to ferment overnight to break down the sticky mucilage around the seeds. After that, it’s soaked and washed in clean water before being spread out on raised drying beds, where it dries for 1–2 weeks.
